How to Make Canna Oil

Canna oil has been growing rapidly in popularity over the past few years. The reason for this is because it’s so versatile and there are so many different kinds. The differences between the different kinds of oils can be fairly drastic depending on which two you’re comparing. For this reason, you can generally find a type of canna-oil for each person and for each person’s needs. The problem many people face is that buying the type of oil they desire from a dispensary or commercial place can be very pricey compared to the price it costs to make, and most people just simply aren’t aware of how, or how simple it is to make canna oil! Luckily in this piece, we’ll be covering the many kinds of canna oils and how to go about making them yourself.

What is Canna Oil?

Canna oil, or more commonly known by its full name cannabis oil is simply a thick oily substance that’s filled with cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are simply the compounds found within the cannabis plant which can be either cannabis sativa or cannabis indica. The most common and well-known cannabinoids found in the cannabis plants are THC and CBD. THC is what gives you the actual psychoactive effect of being “high” and CBD is where much of the pain, anxiety, and anti-inflammatory relief comes from using weed. Although cannabis oil can be fairly easily defined, depending on the cannabinoids in the oil, how much of each cannabinoid contained, and some other factors you will see big differences between the actual types of canna-oil.

Types of Canna Oil and How It’s Made

There are a good amount of types of cannabis oil and it’s important to be aware of the different kinds you may come across. This is especially important because if you were interested in something like cannabidiol or CBD oil (which has no THC in it at all) and you ended up with Butane Hash Oil, you would be in for quite the surprise. In the same light, if you were interested in Butane Hash Oil, which has some of the highest THC content you’ll come across and were given CBD with no THC in it at all you would likely be fairly disappointed. Before going further into the types and how you will make them, there are a few things to cover first that are true across all types of cannabis oil.

First, you need a base. This is mostly up to you which one you decide to go with. The best types of oil to use for the base are usually a high-quality extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil. If these are too expensive or you’d just prefer to go with something else you can also use canola or vegetable oil as a replacement. I would recommend using 2 cups of oil and between 1/4 to 1/2 of an ounce of very finely grounded bud. A general tip is to simmer the oil and bud on low heat for 30-40 minutes. Around 200 degrees F is what you’re going for and it should never be above 300 in any case. However, as you will realize soon, many of the oils are very different and that includes the way in which they are made.

Butane Hash Oil

Butane Hash Oil is fairly simple to make as long as you have the proper tools. Something very important to note is that butane is very flammable so you need to ensure that if you decide to make BHO that you do it in a very well-ventilated zone and aren’t near any open flames or sources of extreme heat. Basically, just make it outside. To make BHO you’ll need a can of butane, a half ounce of finely ground bud, an extractor, and two dishes. One glass dish and a heat resistant dish of any kind. Everything here is really simple except for the extractor, but if you can spare the cash a glass oil extraction tube which you can usually find for around $20 will be perfect for the job and is actually designed just for this. First, you want to fill the extractor with your finely ground bud, next you should put some hot water in the heat-resistant try and put the glass dish on top of it. It’s important that you don’t get any water in the glass dish but just use the water tray for heat because you cannot use a flame under any circumstance. Next you should simply hold the extractor vertically over the glass dish and use gravity to empty the butane can into it. You should wait until the entire can is empty and also once it’s empty wait a few minutes to just let everything settle. Once the bubbling stops the only step left is to scrape the oil from the bottom of the glass dish and the product you have is your own butane hash oil!

Rick Simpson Oil

Rick Simpson Oil is a type of cannabis oil that was made very popular by its namesake Rick Simpson who created and used it to treat his own skin cancer after doctors had failed him. Rick mentions that the THC levels can be up to the 90% range, but that really depends on the strain of cannabis that you use. To make this oil you will need one ounce of dried cannabis, 500ml of isopropyl alcohol and two buckets. First, you should add your dried herbs and crush them up with a spoon. As you are crushing the herbs you should pour about 2/3 of the isopropyl alcohol and completely submerge them as you are stirring it constantly for about 3 or 4 minutes. Now you want to pour the liquid from the first bucket into the second. It’s important that you do your best to leave the plant material in the first bucket. Next, you want to pour the rest of the bottle of isopropyl alcohol into the first bucket with the herbs. Repeat what you did earlier and mix it thoroughly for a few more minutes. Once again, pour the liquid mixture into the second bucket doing your best to leave the herbs in the first bucket. Take the liquid from the second bucket and pour it through a coffee filter into a glass container. This is to separate any of the herbs that are inside that you may have missed from before. One of the final steps is to now use a rice cooker to boil off the alcohol from the mixture. You should set the rice cooker to high, but ensure that it never gets near 300 degrees F. To keep the oil from overheating you should add some drops of water as it is boiling. 2 drops for one ounce of liquid should be more than enough. Once you’re confident that the alcohol has boiled take it off the rice cooker and give it a stir. Pour the contents into a stainless-steel container, give it some more time to allow the last of the alcohol to evaporate and you have your fully finished Rick Simpson Oil!

There are many more types of cannabis oil that can be talked about. CO2 oil, hemp oil, and CBD oil are just a few of many. However, many of these cannabis oils are very difficult to make and require a great deal of experience and more importantly expensive equipment. The ones shown today are some of the simpler ones to make and even they can be incredibly dangerous. It’s essential to take safety as a number one priority when attempting any of these, and to always have a friend or family member close by, as doing anything carelessly or accidentally wrong can lead to disastrous results. With that being said, cannabis oils are some of the most beneficial oils we have today and can be used for a diverse number of things. We wish you luck in creating your own!
